The Larne Area Community Cluster, in collaboration with the Mid and East Antrim Loneliness Network, was delighted to announce a series of uplifting Tea Dances at Larne Town Hall. Following the success of the first event in February, two more Tea Dances were held on Wednesday, 12 March, and Wednesday, 26 March, from 1:45 pm to 5:00 pm.
These events were designed to provide a social space for local residents to come together, enjoy lively music, and engage in warm, friendly conversation. With loneliness becoming an increasing concern within our communities, the Tea Dances offered a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, share experiences, and connect in a welcoming environment.
As part of the Loneliness Working Group—an initiative dedicated to reducing social isolation—the Tea Dances went beyond simple entertainment. They aimed to break down the stigma surrounding loneliness and promote open dialogue among attendees. A dedicated “chatty corner” was available at each event, providing a relaxed space for people to meet, chat, and form new connections.
Alderman Maureen Morrow, an elected representative for Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and a key member of the Larne Area Community Cluster, expressed her enthusiasm for the impact of these events. She shared:
“For anyone feeling isolated, I can assure you that a warm welcome awaited at our Tea Dances. These events provided an opportunity to chat, enjoy some music, and even take to the dance floor. A little laughter and conversation can do wonders for lifting spirits, and I was thrilled with the number of people who took that first step and joined us.”
Alderman Morrow also emphasized the importance of these gatherings in addressing loneliness, noting that one in three people in Northern Ireland will experience loneliness at some point in their lives. She added:
“For those who joined us for a cup of tea, a sandwich, and some friendly conversation, I hope you enjoyed meeting new people and socialising in our warm, welcoming space. Sometimes, a simple chat can make all the difference.”
The Larne Area Community Cluster remains a driving force in promoting community collaboration, working closely with nearly 65 local groups to foster engagement and combat social isolation. The Tea Dances, delivered as part of the Loneliness Working Group, are just one of many initiatives aimed at building a more connected and supportive community in Larne.
The Larne Area Community Cluster would like to extend heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in organising the Tea Dances, as well as to all those who attended each event to embrace the spirit of the occasion and enjoy themselves.
We look forward to the next steps for Larne Area Community Cluster and the exciting possibilities ahead for the local community.
